Drip or Micro Irrigation

Micro Irrigation covers a wide range of different methods for applying moisture at a very low rate. These products are rated in gph (gallons per hour) instead of gpm (gallons per minute). The concept was developed for agriculture in arid areas. Today it is an accepted method for all types of agriculture crops and landscape applications.

Advantages:

  • Water is conserved due to reduced evaporation, wind and run-off.
  • Control of soil moisture reduces stress and disease in plants.
  • You can use small water supplies because of low pressure requirements.
  • Reduction of weed growth between plants in bed areas.
  • No water on walks or driveways.
  • Better water saturation on steep slopes.
  • No overspray on structures when used for foundation plantings.

Disadvantages

  • High maintenance. Regardless of design and filters the chemicals in water can build up and clog the openings.
  • Limited applications. Coverage limitations and practical limitations on the quantity of outlets due to maintenance requirements.
  • Limited supply of moisture in the root zone.
  • Filtration and pressure control.
  • Pipe and tubing exposed on the surface can be unattractive and subject to vandalism.
